Joglo

A traditional Javanese wooden house form with a tall pyramid-like roof, often repurposed into luxury open-plan living in Ubud villas.

A Joglo is a traditional Javanese wooden house typology, famous for its tall central roof structure and strong timber joinery. In Bali’s luxury market, you will often see converted Joglos or new builds that borrow the Joglo roof massing to create dramatic, open-plan living rooms.

Because the roof is a major architectural statement, Joglo-style spaces photograph extremely well. They also tend to feel airy when paired with Bali’s indoor-outdoor lifestyle.

When evaluating a “Joglo villa,” confirm whether the structure is genuinely antique timber, a modern reproduction, and what the engineering and termite-prevention program looks like for the specific build quality.
